Poster Construction

For our poster, we had three different versions of the same poster so that we could compare them and decide which would work best. We interviewed our target audience to help us choose the final poster.

We eventually chose to use number 2 because it got the most positive response from our viewers and it had the most complex tagline. Also we wanted to use a higher contrast between the three green colours of the words 'DEGREES OF SEPARATION' as it made the title stand out. We also did not want to include 'COMING SOON' on our poster because it is not supposed to replicate a teaser poster, but a British film poster. We included the '15' certification as a final touch of professionalism and because it is common on most posters.

Magazine Cover Title

We wanted to create a similar title to Empire in terms of style because we liked the boldness and clearness of it across the page. For this, we wanted to use bright but an uncomplicated colour scheme.

However, we also liked the banner style of 'Sight & Sound' Magazine and wanted to incorporate this within our title.

This is our final design:

Poster Planning

For our poster, we decided to use these two Blue Valentines posters as direct influences. This was because we enjoyed the colours and we loved the fact that it was only the couple in the photo; also the intimacy of the whole poster appealed to us as it reflected exactly the type of film we were attempting to sell.

Planning and Construction - Magazine Cover

I really liked a lot of the photos we took so wanted to use as many as possible. Also, as our film is arthouse, we needed to make it appeal to the audience of British Independent films so our magazine would have to display something for avid film fans. Therefore we decided to go with the theme of 'behind the scenes' and use lots of photos from the photoshoot.

We looked at proofsheets as a way to make it look professional.

We then cut these images out to make a basic template to put our own photos in. We also changed some of the colouring of the photos to make it match this classy black and white look.

Whilst playing around with these images, we considered using it for our poster instead of magazine cover and so added text and colour.

Photoshoot Photos

This is a timeline of the photos we took at our photoshoot. Some of the better photos we have edited in black and white and then ordered them in preparation for our editing for the cover and poster.

Photoshoot Diary

Jan 25th 2014

We drove to Saskia's house in Camberwell where Thea and George were, as they had come back from Uni in Sussex for Saskia's birthday and so that we could photograph them for our poster and magazine.

The weather was the opposite of what we wanted - rain and grey skies. This was inconvenient because we were intending to take photographs of Thea and George outside lying on the grass in Saskia's garden. Luckily, Willa had a patch of fake grass in her garden so we used this and ended up taking the photographs of them lying on the grass inside instead of outside, later we will manipulate this using Adobe Photoshop by editing the lighting and balance of the photo. If the grass does not look real enough in the photo when we put it on our poster, we will cut out Thea and George using the magnetic lasso tool in Photoshop, and paste them onto a background of a photograph of real grass.

We needed to do some filming because we had some parts of our trailer was missing and did not fit the voiceover script. We started by filming them on fake grass inside, because the weather was awful and the lighting outside was too grey. We then filmed the part where Grace is holding Isaac's head in frustration. We had to make sure their mouths fit the voice overs we had previously recorded so it looked like it was them speaking.

After taking photos of them lying on the ground in Saskia's living room, we took ones of them closer up, with Thea looking frustrated with George, to convey the feeling that the relationship was going downhill which we may want for our poster or magazine.

We used a range of styles, on Willa's camera we had the ability to add filters to the photos as we were taking them, and tried some in black and white and some in colour.
